CGTN: China strives to balance dynamic COVID-19 control and economic growth

BEIJING, June 11, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Under a people-centered development philosophy, China prioritizes people’s lives and health as the country is still pursuing a dynamic approach to ensure both epidemic control and social, economic development.

Beijing has continued to fine-tune its anti-COVID-19 approach, making it even more scientifically sound, precise and effective, so as to minimize the impact of the pandemic on economic and social development.

During President Xi Jinping’s latest inspection in southwest China’s Sichuan Province, he called for efforts in overcoming difficulties in economic development while stressing that the dynamic zero-COVID-19 approach must be unswervingly upheld.

President Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, started his inspection on Wednesday, and visited the cities of Meishan and Yibin.

Promoting green agricultural development

Promoting agricultural modernization was highlighted when Xi visited the village of Yongfeng. Relying on the advantages of the rice industry and technology, the village has built the largest pilot test base of new rice varieties in the province.

After learning about local efforts to advance high-standard farmland development, boost grain production and promote rural revitalization, Xi said efforts are needed to strengthen the application and training of modern agricultural science and technology and actively develop green, ecological and efficient agriculture.

“Chinese people have the confidence to keep the rice bowl firmly in our own hands,” he said, adding that it is important to ensure food security, particularly grain production.

Protecting ecological environment in Yangtze River basin

Protecting the ecological environment was another focus during Xi’s inspection tour.

Protecting the ecological environment of the Yangtze River basin is the prerequisite for promoting high-quality development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt, said Xi when he visited Sanjiangkou, where the Jinsha and Minjiang rivers converge into the Yangtze River.

The Yangtze River Economic Belt covers nine provinces and two municipalities, accounting for over 40 percent of the country’s population and economic aggregate.

China’s top leadership has called for efforts to turn the economic belt into the country’s focus for green development, the major artery for a smooth “dual circulation” of domestic and international markets, and the main force spearheading high-quality economic development.

Ensuring people’s normal life and production

During the inspection, Xi also called for measures to facilitate employment of college graduates, promote scientific and technological innovation in enterprises, and enhance the country’s capacity for independent innovation.

The president was deeply concerned about the rescue and treatment of the people injured in the magnitude-6.1 earthquake in Ya’an of Sichuan on June 1.

He urged local authorities to make appropriate arrangements for residents affected by the quake, ensure the supply of daily necessities and make plans for recovery and reconstruction.

Speaking of recent floods and geological disasters in some parts of China, he called for early contingency preparations to safeguard people’s lives and property. He also demanded swift rescue efforts after disasters to minimize casualties and loss of property.

QU STUDENT PLACES FIRST IN A COMPETITION ORGANIZED AT THE GULF MEDICAL UNIVERSITY

The first S.O.A.P (Subjective, Objective, Assessment, and Plan) competition was organized by Gulf Medical University (GMU)- Intravenous and Parenteral Nutrition (IVPN) students club in collaboration with IVPN student listserv. This student club was launched on October 28th, 2021, by the GMU College of Pharmacy and encourages students to avail opportunities to build their leadership skills and open doors for networking with professional pharmacy practitioners, administrators, and pharmacy professors around the globe. Skill building opportunities include pharmacy practice, evidence-based pharmacy, mentorship, and many others. This S.O.A.P competition was a great opportunity to showcase our clinical skills, as S.O.A.P documentation is an important part of clinical practice. The competition comprised of 10 teams with two pharmacy students in Professional Year 4 or above, each from different Colleges of Pharmacy across the world.

Professional Year 4 pharmacy student Halima Sadia from the College of Pharmacy, QU Health, Qatar University, participated alongside teammate Nafis, a pharmacy student studying in Year 5 in GMU. These students were able to secure first place in this competition. This was a two-day competition consisting of two rounds. In the first round we were provided with an integrated clinical case and were asked to prepare a comprehensive pharmaceutical care plan and submit it within two hours. The students used relevant resources to provide appropriate recommendations for multiple drug-related problems that the patient had. Students were able to secure the highest score in this round and were then eligible for round 2 along with two other teams. On the second day of the competition, students presented the patient case with their recommendations in 5 minutes. In this round, they were judged on their presentation skills (verbal, non-verbal and interpersonal compassion, and professionalism among the team members), demonstration of pharmacotherapeutic knowledge and using evidence to support our answers, and how we respond to judges’ questions.

Halima Sadia commented: ‘I would like to highlight that I am extremely grateful to my college and the faculty members who have trained us to do effective S.O.A.P documentation throughout our academic years. I am happy that I was able to carry this knowledge forward and succeed in this competition.’

Dr. Feras Alali, Acting Dean of the College of Pharmacy commented: ‘I am really proud of our students’ achievements as it validates our clinical and patient-focused quality education and experiential training. We are also thankful for the host organization for offering such valuable opportunities for our students.’

Qatar defeat Bahrain in FIBA U-16 Asian Basketball Championship

England held by Italy in drab stalemate

Wolverhampton, England's winless start to their Nations League campaign continued as they were held to a 0-0 draw at home by a youthful Italy side at a near-empty Molineux on Saturday.

The first meeting between the nations since the tumultuous Euro 2020 final at Wembley last year was a tame affair with precious little to cheer for the 2,000 children allowed to attend despite a UEFA ban, Reuters reports.

England's Aaron Ramsdale was the busier of the two keepers, with crucial saves in the first half to deny Sandro Tonali and Matteo Pessina as Italy cut through England's defence.

With Harry Kane left on the bench until the 65th minute, England lacked attacking spark and the closest they came to scoring was Mason Mount's first-half shot against the bar.

Raheem Sterling wasted a glorious opportunity after the break but England did not do enough to earn the win.

Gareth Southgate's side are bottom of Group A3 with two points from their opening three games while Italy, who failed to qualify for the World Cup, are top with five points.

England host Hungary on Tuesday while Roberto Mancini's Italy are away to Germany.

The match was played without fans as part of a UEFA punishment for crowd trouble during last year's Euro 2020 final at Wembley which Italy won on penalties.

While England's lineup had an experimental feel and the atmosphere was flat, the lack of quality and their over-cautious style will be a cause for concern with the World Cup looming in Qatar in November.

It is the first time they have gone three games without a win since Southgate took charge and they have not scored a goal from open play in their last three games.

"We improved upon a lot of things today," Southgate said. "We had two or three really good chances that we needed to score and lacked that bit of sharpness in the final third.

"But the general performance I was pleased with. I thought the second half we were the better team."

Mancini would have been the happier of the two managers as his new-look side played the better football, starting from the third minute when Davide Frattesi side-footed a superb chance wide of the post.

Mount should have scored when he was played in on goal but his curling effort rattled the crossbar.

But the slicker moves came from Italy and Ramsdale made a stunning save with his legs to deny Tonali who looked poised to score from Giovanni Di Lorenzo's volleyed cross.

The Arsenal keeper then had to react smartly to keep out Pessina's looping shot on the stroke of halftime while Gianluca Scamacca also fired another chance over.

Sterling, captain for the night, should have put England ahead but his scooped finish over the crossbar rather summed up the side's misfiring forward line.

"We have been too reliant on Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling and other players have to step into that space," Southgate said.

"A number of them have been able to do it with their clubs but have not converted at international level."
