5.8-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Chile

An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale struck on Thursday the province of Antofagasta, in northern Chile.

The US Geological Survey said the epicenter of the earthquake was 116 km from the city of San Pedro de Atacama, at a depth of 131.6 km.

So far, there have been no reports of material or human losses due to the earthquake.

In 2010, an earthquake of 8.8 magnitude and a tsunami hit central and southern Chile, killing 500 people.

Chile is exposed to frequent earthquakes due to its location along the Ring of Fire.
