WHO Warns of Health Disaster in Sudan

World Health Organization (WHO) has warned of a health catastrophe in Sudan, as a result of the ongoing clashes for more than two weeks, the shortage of workers and medical supplies, and the spread of epidemics.

WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, Ahmed Al Mandhari said it is a disaster in every sense of the word, noting that even before the last conflicts, the healthcare system in Sudan faced numerous crises and was extremely fragile.

He pointed out that there is a real shortage in medical staff after the emergence of this crisis during the past two weeks especially specialized medical staff in surgery and in anesthesia.

He explained that approximately 61 percent of the health institutions operating in Khartoum have stopped working, in addition to direct military attacks on medical institutions and the expulsion of their employees.

The Regional Director pointed out that 23 percent of hospitals in Khartoum are partially operating, while only 16 percent of Khartoum's hospitals are now fully functional.

Some hospitals and health centers in Sudan have been repeatedly bombed, or are empty of staff, medicines and medical supplies, while the organization called a few days ago for an urgent increase in financial support to help provide a rapid response to the growing needs, in terms of logistical and operational support.
