Wathnan Racing and Al Shaqab Racing win Derby Trials

The Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC) organised the 18th race meeting in the 2022-23 season at the Al Rayyan Racecourse turf track on Thursday, 2 December. It was a bumper ten race card, including six Oaks and Derby Trials.

AJS Jamran

In the colours of Al Jeryan Stud, AJS Jamran (BEL) (AF AlBahar x July Du Falgas) began the meeting with an impressive performance for trainer M.H.K Al Attiyah in the 1500m Graduation for 3YO Purebred Arabians as he bolted up by eight and a quarter lengths under jockey Szczepan Mazur. It was the colt’s second straight win on his just third career start.

Hadlan

The second race was a 1500m Local Purebred Arabian Plate for 3YOs and it saw the Abdullah Saeed Abdullah Al Mesnad-owned and Wasim Al Sahn-trained Hadlan (QA) (AF AlBahar x Brasilya) remain unbeaten and grab his second victory in a row by two and a half lengths under jockey Jefferson Smith.

Stunt Game

Having finished second in all his previous six starts, the Yousuf Mubarak Al Kuwari-owned Stunt Game (IRE) (Dandy Man x Rathbride Raven) got off the mark in the seventh for trainer Hamad Al Jehani. The 2YO colt stayed on strongly to win the third race of the day, a 1400m Thoroughbred Plate, by three quarters of a length under jockey Szczepan Mazur, who doubled up on the day.

Torkia

The fourth race, a 1750m Local Thoroughbred Derby Trial saw a classy winner as the Wathnan Racing-owned and Alban de Mieulle-trained Torkia (QA) (Migwar x Firdous) ran out a one and a half-length winner under jockey Ronan Thomas, recording her second victory on her third career start.

QREC Racing Manager, Abdulla Rashid Al Kubaisi, crowned the winners.

Noorah Al Hadi

The Salmeen Abdulla Al Jabri-owned Noorah Al Hadi (QA) (AF AlBahar x Zelda CS) won the fifth race, the Local Purebred Arabian Oaks Trial for 4YO fillies, opening her account at the fourth time of asking. Under jokey Hugo Besnier, she took the 1750m by one and a quarter lengths, completing a double on the day for trainer Hamad Al Jehani.

Abdulaziz Jassim Al Boenain, Manager of Al Uqda Complex Department, crowned the winners.

Al Wakrah

Al Shaqab Racing’s homebred Al Wakrah (FR) (TM Fred Texas x Majida) continued her excellent form with her third consecutive victory, taking the sixth race, the 1750m Purebred Arabian Oaks Trial for 4YO fillies, by two and a half lengths in the hands of jockey Faleh Bughanaim for trainer Eric Lemartinel.

QREC Racing Manager, Abdulla Rashid Al Kubaisi, crowned the winners.

Kareema

Sheikh Faisal Bin Hamad Bin Jassim Al Thani’s homebred Kareema (FR) (Shalaa x Dulkashe) on her just second start won the seventh race, the 1750m Thoroughbred Oaks Trial for 3YO fillies. Mohamed Khaled Elahmed’s trainee scored by three quarters of a length under jockey Alberto Sanna.

Abdulaziz Jassim Al Boenain, Manager of Al Uqda Complex Department, crowned the winners.

Aramis

Aramis (QA) (General x Noorah) completed a double on his just third career start, winning the eighth race, the 1750m National Derby Trial for 4YOLocal Purebred Arabian by half a length and giving owner Wathnan Racing, trainer Alban de Mieulle and jockey Ronan Thomas a second win on the day.

QREC Racing Manager, Abdulla Rashid Al Kubaisi, crowned the winners.

Al Tammtam

Al Tammtam (FR) (TM Fred Texas x Tameemah) remained unbeaten this season with a second straight win in the nineth race, the Purebred Arabian Derby Trial for 4YOs, completing a double on the day for owner and breeder Al Shaqab Racing, trainer Eric Lemartinel and jockey Faleh Bughanaim after a close finish where a neck between him and the runner-up Hargan (FR) (Al Mamun Monlau) was the final winning margin.

Abdulaziz Jassim Al Boenain, Manager of Al Uqda Complex Department, crowned the winners.

Bolthole

The trio of owner Wathnan Racing, trainer Alban de Mieulle and jockey Ronan Thomas completed a treble on the day with Bolthole (IRE) (Free Eagle x Weekend Getaway) clinching the day’s feature, the 2000m Thoroughbred Derby Trial for 3YOs, by only a nose from Scherzo (FR) (Wootton Bassett).
