Two Koreas will Hold Working-Level Talks on Asian Games

Seoul, July 14 (QNA) – South and North Korea will hold working-level talks this week on Pyongyang’s plan to join the upcoming Asian Games, Seoul’s unification ministry said Monday.

The North has accepted the South’s offer to meet on Thursday at the truce village of Panmunjom, according to the ministry handling inter-Korean affairs.

“North Korea sent a message through the Panmunjom liaison office this morning expressing its consent to our proposal,” said ministry spokesman Kim Eui-do.

The communist nation announced earlier that it would dispatch around 150 athletes and coaches to the Asian Games to open in Incheon, west of Seoul, in September, according to (Yonhap).

The North also plans to send a group of female cheerleaders.

The two sides are expected to discuss related details including transportation, cost of the North Korean delegation’s stay here and the size of the cheering squad.

Some observers have not ruled out the possibility that the North will put forward surprise proposals such as the formation of a joint cheering team, joint entry at the opening ceremony and the creation of united teams for selected events.

Last week, Pyongyang proposed that talks be held on Tuesday but Seoul requested a Thursday meeting. (QNA)
