Tomas Berdych, Milos Raonic Win in Washington Open

Washington, July 31 (QNA) – Czech top seed Tomas Berdych beat Robby Ginepri in the second round of the Citi Open in Washington.

Berdych, seeking his 10th career ATP title and first on US soil, defeated US qualifier Robby Ginepri 6-1, 6-4 at the $1.9 million (1.4m euro) hardcourt tune-up for the US Open.

Canadian second seed Milos Raonic fired 16 aces in ousting American Jack Sock 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (7/3) while American Steve Johnson never faced a break point and withstood a 29-ace barrage to defeat countryman Isner 6-7 (5/7), 6-3, 7-6 (8/6).

And Japan’s fourth-seeded Kei Nishikori outlasted American Sam Querrey 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 to join them in the last 16.

Home hope Donald Young claimed a straight-sets 6-4 6-3 victory over 17th seed Julien Benneteau of France in the opening match on Court 1 to set up a third-round tie against compatriot Tim Smyczek.

Eighth seed Feliciano Lopez of Spain was knocked out as he suffered a straight-sets defeat to Victor Estrella. The world number 24 made his exit after he lost 7-6 6-4 to his opponent from the Dominican Republic in an hour and 18 minutes.

Sixth seed Richard Gasquet made much easier work of dispatching Dudi Sela 6-3 6-2, while number 10 Santiago Giraldo dispatched Benjamin Becker 6-2 7-6 (7/3).

In the women’s draw, New Zealand’s Marina Erakovic safely made it through to the third round with a comfortable 6-2 6-2 victory over American wildcard Shelby Rogers in just over an hour.

Kurumi Nara of Japan, looked like she would claim a comeback win against Kazakhstan’s Zarina Diyas after going down 3-6 in the first set and winning the second 6-2. Nara led 4-0 in the third before her opponent was forced to retire, sending the world number 40 through.

France’s Kristina Mladenovic recorded a 6-3 6-4 victory to see off American qualifier Taylor Townsend in an hour and half to progress. Eighth seed Sorana Cirstea suffered an early exit, losing 4-6 7-5 6-3 to Bojana Jovanovski. (QNA)
