Under the patronage of His Excellency Mr. Muhammad bin Abdullah Al Rumaihi, Minister of Municipality and Environment the Department of Agricultural Affairs of the Ministry of Municipalities and Environment shall organize the events of the Second Local Festival of Fresh Dates in 2017 which is sponsored by the management of Waqif Market on the twenty seventh of July.
The Festival shall last for ten days where a wide spectrum of Qatari date producing farms shall participate. The total number of participant farms shall reach 57 with an increase amounting to triple the number of the farms participating in the First Local Festival of Fresh Dates held during the last year. The Festival has been organized within the framework of the remarkable attention paid by the State of Qatar towards supporting and promoting local production including all national products such as fresh dates. The ultimate target of these efforts aims at realizing food security.
The activities of the Festival shall include the presentation of all types of Qatari fresh dates such as Khalas, Khinizi, Barhi and Shishi. The participant farms shall offer their produced local fresh dates for sale during the Festival. Besides, an exhibition of simple handcrafts relying on palm products such as palm fronds, nutritional materials, etc. shall be held.
It is worthy to mention that the total number of registered farms in the State of Qatar during 2016 has reached 1307 including 902 active farms. The total area of the active farms amounts to 36,426 hectares while the area cultivated with palm trees reaches 2406 hectares representing 22.3% of the total area. The total production of dates reaches 28,877 tons while the percentage of self-sufficiency is 81%.
