The Qatari Board of Medical Specialties (QBMS), the national certifying body for medical specializations, held the second cycle for its Part I written examination from the 16th to the 20th of October 2022.

The examination was administered to an impressive 169 physicians, 14% more than the first cycle, and included examinations for sixteen QBMS/ACGME-I accredited specialties, with three more specialties than those included in the first cycle. Four more specialties are expected to be included in the coming cycles.

Dr. Saad Al Kaabi, the Chair of the Executive Committee of QBMS said, “This examination cycle is considered as a continuation of the profound achievement of establishing the QBMS with the contributions and vast expertise of local faculty and staff”.

Dr. Al Kaabi added, “The superior quality achieved in the second cycle of the QBMS examination would not have been possible without the hard work and continuous dedication of the professionals preparing and reviewing the examination and the unwavering support of the esteemed professionals included in the QBMS Examination Committee. The quality of the examination and the management has exceeded expectations and the QBMS intends to keep improving to ultimately provide top-quality healthcare to the people in Qatar.”

Dr. Abdullah Al Naimi, the Chair of the Examination Committee of the QBMS revealed what the future holds for the QBMS examination, “We have successfully completed the second cycle of the part 1 QBMS examination with the help of the continuous efforts of professionals dedicated to excellence. The QBMS is now gearing to prepare for the part 2 of the examination which is set to provide an examination based on standards and policies prepared based on best available evidence. A total of 6 programs are going to be included in the first cycle of QBMS Part 2 examination, which will include a written as well as an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).

Dr. Al Naimi added, “The part 1 and part 2 examination together will aim to provide a holistic approach to certifying the residents to ensure the high quality of healthcare provided to the people of Qatar.”

It is to be noted that the QBMS was incepted in July 2020, under the patronage of the Ministry of Public Health, as a huge and successful leap in medical education in Qatar. Through the board certifying examinations, the healthcare practitioners can be assured for having quality training, competence, and specialty knowledge required to excel in their respective specialties and provide better patient care.
