SUPER MOON TO APPEAR IN QATAR SKY ON SUNDAY

The super moon will appear in Qatar sky on Sunday, Dec 3, Qatar Calendar House (QCH), said.

Qatar residents do not need any astronomical instruments to see the super moon, according to noted astronomer, Dr Beshir Marzouk.

It can be viewed with the naked eye, between the moon-rise time, over the eastern horizon, and the moon-set time, in the western horizon.

The moon will rise in the Doha sky at 4.49 pm on that day and the full moon phase will occur at 6.47 am, Dr Marzouk explained, adding that, the moon will set at 6.31 am the next day.

A super moon occurs when a full moon or new moon coincides with the moon's closest approach to Earth, also known as perigee. The Dec 3 phenomenon is classified as a 'full moon' super moon.

On the other hand, a micro moon occurs when a full moon or new moon coincides with apogee; the point in the moon's orbit, farthest away from the Earth.

Due to the moon's elliptical orbit, the distance between the moon and Earth varies throughout the month and the year. The distance is about 382,900 km on an average, while on Sunday it will be 357,987 km.

The super moon will happen again on Jan 2, 2018.
