Joseph Arboleda-Velasquez, MD, PhD, an associate scientist at Mass Eye and Ear, and a co-senior author of the study, study said that finding 27 people, some of whom live in the city and some of whom live in rural areas who carry a genetic risk for Alzheimer's disease, along with the presence of one copy of the Christchurch variant in their genes, which delays cognitive decline by about 5 years, increases the team's confidence in the discovery, and shows that the results could be replicable.
