Strong Earthquake Strikes Off El Salvador

General

A strong earthquake measuring 6.5 magnitude on the Richter scale struck off El Salvador's Pacific coast on Wednesday morning.

The quake shook much of Central America from Nicaragua to Guatemala. Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua all share coastline around the gulf on the Pacific coast.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter was 43 kilometers south of Intipuca, El Salvador at a depth of 70 kilometers.

There were no immediate reports of damage and the earthquake did not trigger a tsunami warning for El Salvador.

Central America is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire where many tectonic plates meet and cause frequent volcanic and seismic activity.

In 2001, a devastating 7.6-magntiude earthquake struck El Salvador, killing hundreds and injuring and displacing thousands.
