Somalia Adopts Election by Direct Universal Suffrage in 2024

The Government of Somalia and the states of the country announced today that general elections will be held from 2024, based on the principle of "one person one vote" under a landmark agreement that puts an end to a controversial indirect and complex electoral system.

Somalia News Agency SUNA reported that the declared polling system will be adopted in the local elections scheduled for June 30, 2024, before elections to select parliamentarians and district presidents on November 30, 2024.

This was during the National Consultative Council meeting in the capital, Mogadishu, chaired by Somali President Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud.

During the meeting, agreement was reached on the country's election issues, security and counter-terrorism developments, foreign debt forgiveness and local council elections.

It was also agreed to establish two political parties in Somalia, a national electoral commission and individual elections at the provincial and federal level.
