Russia Announces Formal Withdrawal from CFE

Russia announced its formal withdrawal from the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE).

The decree formally appoints Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov to represent Putin during parliamentary proceedings on denouncing the treaty.

CFE was signed in Paris, France, in 1990, before an updated version was signed in 1999 at the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Summit.

The amended treaty was ratified by only four countries, namely: Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Ukraine, but in 2007 Moscow suspended its participation until NATO ratifications.
