Representatives Council committee hails NIHR’s role in improving services delivered to inmates

The Foreign Affairs, Defence and National Security Committee at the Council of Representatives, chaired by MP Hassan Eid Bu-Khammas, has lauded the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)'s announcement that hunger-striking inmates at the Reformation and Rehabilitation Centre (Jau) had ended their hunger strike on September 11 after the actual beginning of the development of the services delivered to them.

The committee expressed appreciation for the professional, human rights and humanitarian role of the NIHR, and that of other national mechanisms, such as the Prisoners and Detainees Rights Commission (PDRC), citing their multiple visits to the Reformation and Rehabilitation Centre to meet the centre's officials and a number of inmates, which culminated in the announcement of the beginning of procedures to develop and improve services, including healthcare.

The panel affirmed its constant support for the legislative development of Bahrain's human rights system, which enjoys the interest of the state, being an authentic approach and a well-established culture, under the comprehensive development march, led by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and supported by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister.

The Foreign Affairs, Defence and National Security Committee at the Council of Representatives praised the unwavering interest of the national mechanisms, such as the NIHR and the PDRC, in following up on issues related to the inmates' rights, and keenness to examine all demands submitted to them by inmates, in accordance with the rights stipulated in national legislation and the relevant international standards.

The parliamentary committee highlighted the ongoing development of humanitarian programmes, initiatives and reforms in the kingdom, praising the constant cooperation of all state institutions with the NIHR and other national mechanisms, noting that the NIHR is a fully independent vital institution, with an effective mandate to protect and promote human rights in the kingdom.
