QU HOSTS THE NATIONAL 3MT COMPETITION IN QATAR

Qatar University’s (QU) is pleased to be hosting the first-ever National 3MT (three-minute thesis) Competition in the State of Qatar on Saturday, October 9, 2021 from nine o'clock until ten thirty in the morning.

At the National 3MT Competition, finalists will have three minutes to present the significance of their thesis research to a general audience. Qatar University has successfully conducted the 3MT event at a university level over the past 4 years, and this year, QU is bringing the competition to the national stage. All higher education institutions offering thesis-based graduate programs were invited to participate, and the following universities will be represented at the 2021 National 3MT Finals: Qatar University (host and organizer), Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Al Rayyan International University College, Virginia Commonwealth University-Qatar, Texas A&M University, Qatar, and University of Calgary-Qatar. The 2021 National 3MT Competition is proudly being sponsored by ConocoPhillips Qatar.

This year’s event is a hybrid event with presentations and judging taking place at QU’s College of Education building in front of delegates representing the participating universities. The larger general audience will be attending via WebEx. The national competition celebrates the growth and diversity in graduate education in Qatar in addition to highlighting the impactful research of some of the country’s brightest graduate students. The National 3MT Competition is an excellent opportunity to facilitate and strengthen collaboration among universities. This is also a way to encourage prospective graduate students to pursue one of the many unique opportunities for graduate study available right here in Qatar.

The event will include special addresses by H.E. Dr. Ibrahim bin Saleh bin Khalifa Al Naimi, Undersecretary at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education as well as Qatar University President, H.E. Dr. Hassan Al-Derham. In addition, the event will welcome a distinguished judges’ panel including Fatima Al Remaihi, CEO of the Doha Film Institute, Khalid Al-Ali, Acting Assistant Undersecretary for Higher Education Affairs at the MOEHE, Buthaina Al Ansari, Strategic Planning and Human Development Expert, Mohamed Al Jifairy, Scientist and ‘Stars of Science’ winner, and Imad Al Khoja, CEO of Injaz Qatar. The judges’ panel will be tasked with the exciting yet difficult challenge of determining the country’s top three winners from among 17 outstanding finalists, while the general audience will be able to vote for their favorite finalist in the People’s Choice category.

The National 3MT grand prize winner will receive 15,000 QR, and the second and third place winners will receive 10,000QR and 7,000QR, respectively. Additionally, National 3MT winners, including the People’s Choice winner, will be presented with a certificate at the Qatar University Annual Research Forum.
