QU CONTINUES TO UNDERGO PREPARATIONS TO HOST A NUMBER OF INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAMS

The Argentinian and Spanish teams will reside in the QU campus during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™

With the start of the new academic year, Qatar University (QU) resumes its various preparations to host the international football teams, Argentina and Spain, who will be residing and training in the QU campus throughout the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™.

In a statement on the occasion, QU President Dr. Hassan Al-Derham said, “As part of its role as a national institution of higher education and a house of expertise in the country, Qatar University works together with other institutions in Qatar in order to play an active role in the upcoming FIFA World Cup™. The University is conducting research, studies, seminars, and meetings, and has presented ideas and consultation during the preparation phase of the event and continues to do so. The University will offer what is necessary to ensure that this global event is a success and make sure that this is a unique World Cup, as we believe strongly in excellence and instill this in our way of life and our work.”

Dr. Al-Derham added, “The University's involvement is not limited to the preparation stage but will play an essential role by hosting the Argentinian and Spanish national teams, as well as hosting the Netherlands national team for training. We are proud of our sports infrastructure, which includes six international standard football training grounds, in addition to swimming pools, fitness centers, and other sports facilities that have been prepared to the needs and requirements of the international sports teams. These prestigious national football teams choosing Qatar University as their base for FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ is a stamp of accreditation for the topnotch facilities that we host.”

He said, “We at Qatar University believe in our capabilities and the ability of our country to host an exceptional event in a manner commensurate with Qatar's position and aspirations.”

QU Director of Facilities and General Services Department, Eng. Mai Fetais said in a statement, “We started our preparations very early to ramp up the infrastructure for hosting the international sports teams during the World Cup. The planning, coordination, management and implementation of this work are carried out by the Facilities and General Services Department and representatives of the relevant university departments in coordination with FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 LLC (Q22) and the Security and Safety Operations Committee (SSOC). The residential spaces for the Argentinian and Spanish teams are refurbished and developed in accordance with the contractual commitments of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) for housing. Kitchen and dining halls will be reequipped to provide food services, housekeeping services provided throughout the day, as well as entertainment, internet, and transportation services, which is planned by Q22 on behalf of the teams.”

She added, “As for the operations, it is managed by the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Safety & Security Operations Committee in accordance with the requirements of the tournament. FIFA has made some changes to the player’s rooms to ensure complete comfort of the players and to let them experience the atmosphere of the tournament.”

It is worth noting that Qatar University hosts three outdoor sports complexes, in addition to an indoor facility for women. These facilities host various sports, including football, volleyball, handball, basketball, tennis, swimming, diving, water polo, squash, and others.

Among the most prominent of these facilities is Qatar University Stadium, which is one of the university’s main facilities, and was built in accordance with international and Olympic specifications and includes a football field, running track, and athletics tracks. It can accommodate up to 10,000 spectators and includes rooms and facilities necessary to host big matches.
