The State of Qatar affirmed that its victory in the elections for the Human Rights Council membership for the period 2022-2024 reflects the confidence of the international community in the active and positive role the State of Qatar played in the field of protecting and promoting human rights and related issues.
This came in the statement of the State of Qatar delivered by HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, before the United Nations General Assembly at its 76th session to discuss the "Report of the Human Rights Council".
In the statement, the State of Qatar reiterated its commitment to implementing the pledges and voluntary commitments it made, including continuing to develop and harmonize national legislations to comply with international human rights law, and to provide support for joint programs and projects at the bilateral and multilateral levels among the countries of the region that contribute to the promotion and protection of human rights.
The statement also drew the attention to the constructive role played by the State of Qatar, through mediation, to resolve crises in the region from a human rights and humanitarian perspective.
The State of Qatar stressed its continued support for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and renewed its open invitation to the mandate holders and special procedures of the Human Rights Council, and the continuation of providing support to United Nations bodies, in particular the activity of the Human Rights Training and Documentation Center in Doha in the field of human rights. Human rights for Southwest Asia and the Arab region hosted by the State of Qatar.
Tn its statement, the State of Qatar stressed its continued support for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and renewed its open invitation to the mandate holders and special procedures of the Human Rights Council, and to continue providing support to United Nations bodies, in particular supporting the activity of the United Nations Center for Training and Documentation in the field of human rights for Southwest Asia and the Arab region hosted by the State of Qatar.
The statement considered that the issue of promoting and protecting human rights an essential and central pillar in the international relief and development programs of the State of Qatar, which aim in particular to implement the right to development and the right to education, and to mitigate the negative effects of climate change on the full and effective enjoyment of human rights. It noted that the State of Qatar, through its membership of the Human Rights Council, will continue to highlight these important issues.
The statement referred to the report of the Human Rights Council, which dealt with the Council's decisions on the human rights situation in the occupied Palestinian territory and in the Syrian Arab Republic. It said that "the report reflects the gravity of the flagrant violations of human rights committed against the Palestinian and Syrian peoples." It called for effective and urgent measures to be taken by the international community, commensurate with the gravity of the situation that civilians face as a result of these violations.
Concluding, the State of Qatar reiterated its commitment to continue its efforts to promote and protect human rights, expressing its aspiration to contribute effectively to the work of the Human Rights Council during the next three years.
