Qatar Partakes in 6th Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction

Doha, June 24 (QNA) -Qatar is participating in the 6th Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR) , being organized by the Royal Thai Government in collaboration with United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) with support from International and National Development Partners.

HE Maj.Gen. Saad Bin Jassim Al Khulaifi, the Director General of Public Security who is also head of the standing emergency committee leads Qatar’s delegation to the conference which kicked off in Bangkok Convention Center earlier Sunday , June 22 and is to run for five days.

 The conference aims to strengthen the political will to reduce the risk of disasters and to enable communities to deal with these risks and the ability for recovery in line with the international practices and the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) 2005-2015 in addition to strengthening cooperation and exchange of experiences in this field.

High-level delegations representing other countries from Asia and the Pacific are also taking part in the conference as well as other representatives from the non-governmental organizations along with international and regional experts and specialists in the field of disaster.

The (AMCDRR) is a biennial conference jointly organized by different Asian countries and UNISDR. The event represents a unique opportunity for governments and stakeholders in the region to reaffirm their commitment to the implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015 (HFA), a global blueprint for disaster risk reduction, which was adopted by 168 UN Member States at the 2nd World Conference on Disaster Reduction in Kobe, Japan in 2005.

The AMCDRR also serves as a forum to exchange experiences on successful practices and innovative approaches in reducing and managing disaster risk. Since 2005, five AMCDRR have been organized, which adopted political declarations that reaffirmed the commitments to implement HFA regional strategies.(QNA)
