In continuation of its efforts to achieve the national goal set by the Qatar National Vision 2030, the fourth Summer Research Internship Program is being organized by the Qatar University Young Scientists Center (QUYSC) at QU. This year 308 students including 217 females and 91 males registered for the internship projects, which will be held on-campus after a 2-year span of online learning owing to the Covid-19 period. The Summer Research Internship Program 2022, which started in May will end this month on 23 June.
Apart from the 22 QU internal internship projects, two external internship projects under this program are being offered by Qatar Petrochemical Company (QAPCO) and the world’s leading oil & gas company, ExxonMobil.
The internal projects will be carried out by eight research centers and five colleges including science, engineering, and social science disciplines. The research centers include QU’s Center For Advanced Materials, Laboratory Animal Research Center, Central Laboratories Unit, Environmental Science Center, Biomedical Research Center, Social and Economic Survey Research Institute, Center for Sustainable Development and Qatar University Young Scientists Center, while the participating colleges are QU’s College of Dental Medicine, College of Sharia and Islamic Studies, College of Arts and Science, College of Engineering, and College of Education.
Exxonmobil offers internships in earth science, technology, chemistry, and engineering fields, while the QAPCO offers in management and finance departments. The QU internal projects are carried out under two tracks – Track 1: Outcomes-directed intensive research program and Track 2: Research & training focused.
The pool of registered students come from diverse backgrounds of more than 28 nations, and 40 international universities. Meanwhile, more than 10 percent of total students are Qatari nationals thereby indicating the active role of national-based skilled youth in the educational sector. It is highly commendable that QU is the principal home ground for tertiary education for both citizens and expatriates alike.
Prof. Noora Jabor Al-Thani, Director of the Qatar University Young Scientists Center talks about the impact of the Summer Research Internship 2022 saying, “Qatar is undergoing rapid transformation in the direction of development in all sectors and the demand for a highly skilled workforce with multidisciplinary competencies, adaptability, and resilience in the global ecosystems are increasingly significant. The internship program will contribute to fostering the students meeting these demands and beyond.”
