Makhlouf, UN Resident Coordinator discuss boosting cooperation

Damascus, SANA- Minister of Local Administration, Chairman of the Higher Relief Committee and Environment Hussein Makhlouf discussed with the UN Resident Coordinator in Syria, El-Mostafa Benlamlih, the latest developments in the response of the UN organizations operating in Syria and what is being provided to the earthquake-affected provinces.

Makhlouf presented the measures taken by the government, the Committee and its sub-committees in the affected governorates through its operating rooms since the beginning of the earthquake. As the focus was on saving lives, removing rubble, securing health services and shelters for those whose houses were destroyed and cracked.

Minister Makhlouf noted to the importance of the work provided by the UN organizations operating in Syria, which integrated with governmental efforts in cooperation with the national partners in the Syrian Trust for Development, the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, and other organizations and institutions.

In turn, Benlamlih stressed that the sanctions imposed on Syria impede the humanitarian work, explaining that Syria today is suffering a double crisis as a result of the war since 2011 along with the earthquake, which made the situation more difficult, as the number of people in need increased.

He pointed out that the needs in Syria is increasing, and so they must be met with appropriate assistance.

The Syrian government has provided all facilitations to deliver aid to all affected places, Benlamlih asserted, adding that the UN will seek to secure more funding from donors to provide the needed humanitarian support.
