The Al Wasmiyah Farm-sponsored Al Wasmiyah Pretty Polly Stakes, a Group 1 for Fillies and Mares at the Curragh Racecourse, Ireland is one of the main summer feature races for fillies and mares in the European calendar. This year’s edition, run on Sunday 28 June, featured the return of the multiple Group 1 heroine MAGICAL(IRE) (Galileo x Halfway To Heaven), who has not been seen since her emphatic win in the QIPCO Champion Stakes (Gr1) at Ascot last October.
Drawn wide, the odds-on favorite MAGICAL took the lead in the 2,000-meter race under Seamus Heffernan, with ROCA ROMA (Australia) and CAYENNE PEPPER (Australia) in behind her. In single file through the turn, they remained in the same order. MAGICAL wasted no time once in the straight and pulled readily clear of her rivals. Alone and unchallenged, she put the race to an end before they were half-way down the straight, breezing past the post by 4 ¼ lengths from CAYENNE PEPPER. FLEETING (Zoffany) finished further 1¾-lengths behind in third. This was Magical’s 10th career win, causing jockey Hefferan to describe her as ‘pure class’.
Owned and bred by the Coolmore partners, MAGICAL runs in the colours of Derrick Smith for Ballydoyle maestro Aidan O’Brien. The five-year-old bay mare boasts a blue-blooded pedigree as she is a daughter of the extraordinary GALILEO, the best sire in living memory, and out of Sun Chariot (Gr1) heroine Halfway to HEAVEN, by leading sire PIVOTAL. MAGICAL is also a full sister to another multiple Group 1 winner; namely, RHODODENDRON.
