Indian Troops Kill Two Muslim Rebels in Kashmir

Srinagar, Kashmir, June 23 (QNA) -The Indian Security forces killed two Muslim militants in a clash in India-administered Kashmir on Monday, police said.

The clash began after troops surrounded a house in the town of Sopore, 50 kilometres north-west of state capital Srinagar on Sunday afternoon following a tip.

Mehmood Bhai, a reputed commander of the Lashkar-e-Taiba rebel group was killed along with another militant, according to a local police officer who requested anonymity.

No troops were injured in the shootout that lasted 18 hours, the officer said.

Nearly 44,000 people have died in secessionist violence since the mid-1980s in India-administered Kashmir, according to the South Asia Terrorism Portal.

India has repeatedly accused Pakistan of aiding Kashmiri militants. Islamabad denies the charge, calling the insurgents freedom fighters.(QNA)
