India Landslide Death Toll Rises to 23

New Delhi, July 31 (QNA) – The death toll in a landslide in western India rose to 23 Thursday as more bodies buried in mud and debris were recovered, news reports said.

The toll was expected to rise as at least 150 other residents of Malin village in Maharashtra state were still feared buried, NDTV news channel reported.

“We have found 23 bodies and rescued eight people,” National Disaster Response Force officer Alok Avasthy was quoted as saying.

Over 160 villagers were trapped early Wednesday when heavy rains caused a mudslide from a hill alongside the village.

At least 44 houses were buried in the mudslide in the remote village which is part of a tribal area.

Heavy rains in the area was hampering rescue efforts Thursday.(QNA)
