Greece Evacuates Diplomats, Citizens from Libya

Athens, July 31 (QNA) – Greece dispatched a navy frigate to Libya on Thursday to carry out an emergency evacuation of Greek citizens and embassy personnel, as fighting between rival militias continued to escalate.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs decided to send the ship, as Tripoli airport, the scene of gun battles, was considered too dangerous an escape route as was driving to neighboring Tunisia.

Embassy staff, along with approximately 80 Greeks who live in Libya, have been informed that they can board the vessel.

Other countries, such as China, have also requested that the Greek vessel help its citizens leave Libya. Hundreds of Chinese workers have already been evacuated from the war-torn country, dpa reported.

The move comes a day after dozens of British and French citizens were evacuated from the country.(QNA)
