The two teams were playing a play-off to determine the relegating team. The first match in Hamburg ended in 0-0 draw. Michel Lasogga headed the opener for Hamburg in the 14th minute. That meant that Fuerth had to win in order to stay in the top division. However they managed no more than an equalizer in the 59th minute via Stephan Fuerstner.

The three-time league winners and former European champions Hamburg finished third bottom in their worst Bundesliga season and faced becoming the last of its founding members from 1963 to be relegated. Fuerth placed third in the second division. (QNA)
