GCC Welcomes Short-Term Ceasefire Agreement in Sudan

The Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC) has welcomed the short-term ceasefire agreement between the Sudanese armed forces SAF and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which was signed Saturday in Jeddah.

In a statement issued Sunday, GCC Secretary-General Jassim Muhammad Al-Budaiwi lauded the relentless diplomatic efforts of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United States of America, which culminated in converging views between the warring parties in Sudan in order to establish a cease-fire armistice to open the way for peace opportunities in Sudan.

Al-Budaiwi pointed to Arab Summit resolution (32) on Sudan, which stipulated the affirmation that the Sudanese talks in Jeddah are a step that can be built upon to end the crisis.

He also affirmed the GCC countries' support for all diplomatic efforts to enable the Sudanese to solve problems by preferring the language of dialogue and sparing the brotherly Sudanese people the horrors of wars and conflicts. He voiced hope that Sudan would enjoy lasting peace so that it could preserve state institutions and achieve comprehensive and sustainable development for the Sudanese people.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United States of America on Saturday announced that representatives of SAF and RSF signed, in Jeddah, an agreement on a short-term ceasefire and humanitarian arrangements.

According to agreement, the short-term ceasefire, which enters into force 48 hours after the signing of the agreement, shall remain in effect for seven days and may be extended with the agreement of both parties.

The ceasefire will go into effect at 9:45 pm, Khartoum time, on May 22.
