EU Offers Iraq 5 million Euros in Humanitarian Aid

Luxembourg, June 23 (QNA) – The European Union is giving Iraq an extra 5 million euros (6.8 million dollars) in humanitarian aid to help it cope with people displaced by the insurgency, the bloc’s foreign ministers said.

“The EU expressed its deep concern about the rapidly deteriorating security situation in Iraq,” they said in a joint statement, urging the Iraqi authorities to protect civilians and respect international humanitarian law, dpa reported.

“Failure to jointly combat this threat will exacerbate the conflict and deepen the sectarian divide. The new government must take decisive measures to promote an inclusive approach … and address the needs and legitimate aspirations of all components of Iraqi society,” the statement added.(QNA)
