Death Toll in Turkey Mine Disaster at Over 280

Ankara, May 15 (QNA) – The number of people killed in what could be Turkey’s worst mining disaster rose to over 280, the government was reported as saying Thursday.

No miners were found alive in the previous 12 hours as more bodies were recovered, said Energy Minister Taner Yildiz, according to the Anadolu Agency (AA).

The Confederation of Turkish Trade Unions called for workers to strike Thursday in honour of the victims from the Soma coal mine, located about 230 kilometres south of Istanbul.

Demonstrators in Istanbul on Wednesday accused the government of murder in its handling of the incident.

Dozens of miners are still thought to be trapped underground. (QNA)
