Arab Region Hosts Biggest Number of Refugees in the World

Cairo, June 23 (QNA) – Regional representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Egypt Mohamed al-Dairy said the Arab region hosts the biggest number of refugees in the world, pointing to the presence of four million Palestinian refugees and 400,000 Iraqi refugees in the region at the end of last year.

Speaking at an event organized by the UNRWA in cooperation with the Arab League on the World Refugees Day, he said there are 2.8 million Syrian refugees registered with the UNRWA, a majority of them in Lebanon which hosts 1.3 million refugees or one fifth of the country’s population.

Al-Dairy said that Jordan hosts Syrian refugees who represent a tenth of the Kingdom’s population, calling for providing support to both Jordan and Lebanon to shoulder the burden of providing services to those refugees.

Arab League Secretary General Nabil El Araby called for upgrading the Arab Convention on Regulating Status of Refugees in the Arab Countries, adopted in 1994.(QNA)
