The Arab Network of National Human Rights Institutions held its 23rd General Assembly and accompanying annual conference in the Jordanian capital Amman.

In her opening speech at the General Assembly, HE Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah, who serves as the Chairperson of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions and Chairperson of Qatars National Human Rights Committee, said that the atrocities committed by the Israeli attacks in Palestine and Lebanon place heavy responsibilities upon human rights bodies to continue supporting human rights, no matter how challenging the issue of double standards may be.

Her Excellency added that human rights are a global heritage that concerns everyone and that they are all required to uphold these rights. Al Attiyah emphasized the need to continue striving for justice and rallying efforts to prosecute war criminals and ensure they do not escape punishment, stressing that leaving perpetrators of violations unaccountable is the greatest threat to international p
eace and security.

Her Excellency added that the resolve and determination was crucial, no matter how staggering the collapse in commitment to human rights currently is. She explained that the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions has been working to support its members in conflict and war zones. Al Attiyah further mentioned that the alliance has clear positions in supporting institutions in Iraq, Palestine, Lebanon, Yemen, Libya, and Sudan, and it continuously strives to secure sources of support to ensure these institutions’ stability and the continuation of their activities with as much independence as possible.

The meetings of the General Assembly of the Arab Network of National Human Rights Institutions were attended by 50 international and regional organizations, national institutions, and government representatives from within Jordan, along with 40 representatives of civil society organizations, experts, and human rights activists.

During the General Assembly, the presidency of the A
rab Network transitioned from the Arab Republic of Egypt to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, represented by Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Jordan’s National Center for Human Rights Samar Al Hajj.
