AHRC Concludes Session After Discussing Qatar’s Second Periodic Report

The Arab Human Rights Committee of the Arab League (AHRC), Arab Charter on Human Rights, concluded its 17th session held at the headquarters of the Arab League’s General Secretariat in Cairo.

A statement issued by the committee Wednesday said that in the course of the session’s work, an interactive dialogue was held with a high-level, broad, and multi-governmental delegation from the State of Qatar headed by HE Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr. Ahmad Hassen Al Hammadi. The interactive dialogue included the axes of the second periodic national report of the State of Qatar as part of the entitlements of its accession to the Arab Charter on Human Rights.

According to the statement, the committee asked many questions to the state’s delegation over two days through constructive interactive dialogue, in which the delegation of the State of Qatar responded to questions that revolved around human rights issues in the State of Qatar, including political and civil rights, economic, social and cultural rights and issues related to the right to equality, non-discrimination, combating human trafficking and others.

The committee also held two closed hearings with representatives of civil society organizations and the Qatar National Human Rights Committee, which included a presentation of the shadow reports submitted by the aforementioned authorities.

The committee’s statement confirmed that the delegation of the State of Qatar responded to the interactive dialogue during the discussion sessions and welcomed it, stressing that the delegation dealt with all matters raised with great interest and is aware of the importance and value of the provisions of the Charter and its mechanism.

The committee indicated that the meetings of its members are continuing to consider the documents received and the discussions that took place in preparation for the adoption of the final recommendations that will be submitted to the State of Qatar and will be published on the AHRC website (the Arab Charter Committee on Human Rights).
