African Union Condemns Military Coup in Gabon

Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki condemned today the military coup carried out in Gabon against President Ali Bongo Ondimba.

Faki said in a statement that he was following with concern developments in Gabon following the coup, adding that it was a severe violation of democratic principles and the African Union’s charter.

Senior officers of the Gabonese army announced earlier today that they were seizing power from the existing regime. This came hours after the national authority in charge of elections in Gabon announced the re-election of Ali Bongo Ondimba as president of the country.
