ADIREC opens at 2013 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week

WAM Abu Dhabi, Jan 17th, 2013 (WAM) — The Abu Dhabi International Renewable Energy Conference (ADIREC) opened today, as part of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW).

ADIREC brings together Energy Ministers and a wide range of private sector, civil society and other stakeholders to explore ways to expand the global deployment of renewable energy. It is the fifth such conference in a series launched following the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002. Previous meetings have been held in Bonn, Washington, Beijing and Delhi.

This year, ADIREC is being held together with the World Future Energy Summit, the International Water Summit, the ASPA summit of Arab and South American Energy Ministers and the Zayed Future Energy Prize. It follows the Third Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), which has its headquarters in Abu Dhabi. Together these events constitute ADSW, which aims to drive cooperation on clean energy and water sustainability issues in a holistic way.

ADIREC is co-organized by the UAE and by REN21, a multi-stakeholder network aimed at promoting a rapid transition to renewable energy and responsible for the IREC meetings.

“We are proud to be hosting ADIREC as part of ADSW,” said Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, UAE Special Envoy for Energy and Climate Change and CEO of Masdar. “This underscores the central role the UAE plays in international policy on renewable energy, both through our own efforts and as the home of IRENA.” ADIREC will feature a wide range of policy discussions bringing together the worlds of politics, business, finance, academia and civil society. In line with ADSW’s focus, the nexus between water and energy issues will be one of the main issues under discussion.

“Renewable energy is more important than ever in this region” said Mohamed El-Ashri, Chair of REN21. “We are seeing an unprecedented attention to making renewable energy a core part of the energy mix, both in the Middle East and around the world.” WAM/HH/AM
