5.6 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Japanese Chichijima Island

An earthquake measuring 5.6 magnitude on the Richter scale hit off today the coast of the Chichijima island which is 700 miles south of the Japanese capital, Tokyo, according to what was announced by the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The agency stated that the earthquake was at a depth of 10 kilometers off Chichijima Island, no tsunami warning was issued.

In 2011, an earthquake with a magnitude of 9.0 on the Richter scale along with a tsunami, killed more than 20,000 people and caused a disaster at the Japanese Fukushima nuclear plant Japan often witnesses earthquakes, as it is located on the "Ring of Fire" in the Pacific region, in which intense seismic activity is recorded that extends across Southeast Asia to the Pacific basin.
