Pakistan Army Launches Sweeping Counter-terrorism Operation

Islamabad, - Pakistan's army on Wednesday launched a security operation across the country to eliminate the "residual and latent threat of terrorism," the army's public relations department said in a statement carried by English-speaking daily Dawn.

The operation also aims to consolidate the gains made in other military operations, and further ensure the security of Pakistan's borders, read the statement.

The effort includes broad spectrum security and counter-terrorism operations across the country with a focus on effective border security management. Countrywide de-weaponization and explosive control are additional cardinals of the effort, the statement added.

The announcement followed a meeting in Lahore between Chief of Armed Staff Qamar Javed Bajwa and a number of military chiefs and heads of intelligence agencies.
