Doha, - Youssef El Arabi bagged a brace as a dominant Lekhwiya claimed a 3-0 victory over Al Jazira in their 2017 AFC Champions League Group B opener at Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium on Monday.
The hosts opened the scoring 11 minutes into the game when El Arabi continued his fine goal scoring form of late by heading in Youssef Msakni's cross from the right from six yards, before Msakni deservedly doubled the Qatari side's lead with 10 minutes remaining.
El Arabi then tapped in from substitute Ali Afif's center in added time to wrap up a comfortable victory for Lekhwiya as the Emiratis' winless run in the continental competition stretched to eight games.
In another match, Al Jaish of Syria got their 2017 campaign off to winning ways on Monday thanks to Mohammad Hamdkou's 24th minute strike in their 1-0 win over Jordan's Al Ahli in the Group A opener.
The 2004 winners, who reached the quarter-finals in last year's competition, took the lead before the half hour mark through midfielder Hamdkou who fired home from close range, although Marcus Macauley did go close to an equalizer on the 34th minute with a header onto the crossbar.
But parity was made more remote for the Jordanian visitors with 18 minutes of the tie remaining when midfielder Saleem Obaid was dismissed for a second bookable offence leaving Al Ahli to play out the remainder of the match with 10 men.
